Wetlands and My Property

Why are Wetlands Important to ME on my Property?

Farmers:

Wetlands do an excellent job of filtering sediments and nutrients from water and provide farmers with the right tool to ensure that nutrient laden runoff from their fields, barnyards, and farm is not polluting local streams and rivers. Wetlands can also help farmers to stabilize water cycles by reducing flood damage and providing water during drought conditions. Wetlands provide excellent wildlife habitat to hunt, view wildlife, and recreate by attracting ducks, deer, turkeys, pheasants and numerous other species of wildlife.

Wetlands were once thought to be areas of low value and prior to 1985 were legally drained on farms for the production of food. Farmers willing to restore these areas can get compensated for doing so and by committing to protect these areas for future generations can get paid for placing easements on these areas as well. The resulting wetlands are of much higher value to the Farmer and our society than the low production crop fields that they were originally converted to.

Hunters:

Wetlands provide incredible wildlife habitat. Over 700 species of wildlife utilize wetlands during some portion of their lifecycle. This single habitat type can be an excellent attractant for whitetail deer, bear, turkey, pheasant, geese, ducks, and numerous other game species of wildlife. Restoring, creating or enhancing wetlands on your property can attract the type of wildlife that is of interest to you.

Birders, Wildlife Photographers, and Outdoor Enthusiasts:

Wetlands provide incredible wildlife habitat. Over 700 species of wildlife utilize wetlands during some portion of their lifecycle. Wetlands create excellent opportunities for viewing wildlife and enjoying the recreational opportunities that the attracted wildlife brings to your property. Whether your passion is enjoying wildlife or you need a great photo for your next story; restoring, creating or enhancing a wetland on your property can provide you with the opportunity.

Entrepreneurs:

Wetlands can earn you cash. Under certain conditions landowners can get paid to construct wetlands for mitigation, critical endangered species habitats, or restore and protect wetlands in perpetuity on your property. Wetlands have been proven to be of a high value to our society and under certain circumstances; special interest groups, federal and state governments, and wetland mitigants will pay significant dollars to landowners who allow wetlands to be restored or constructed on their property.
